Install TWRP & SuperSu on Redmi Note 3 Marshmallow | Tech-The Hard Way

This is the second article on Redmi Note 3.So after unlocking the bootloader of your device,the obvious thing to do is to flash a custom recovery and maybe root your device.And this article,we’ll showing you how to do the same.

Yes! Now we can flash TWRP on MM based roms without getting that encrypted data error.This is because MIUI China Forum member BY~XM  compiled a new TWRP with inbuilt feature to flash incremental OTA’s. So all credits goes to BY~XM for his awesome work and please thank him on his original post. So let’s get started.

Now coming to the pre-requisite part:

  • Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon Variant
  • Unlocked Bootloader

Steps involved:

  • Download the required files from here.
  • Put / reboot your device into bootloader mode. To do that, simply turn off your device, press the Power button and Volume down (  ) button at the same time.
  • Now connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
  • Extract the zip and run the Flash.bat file.(It will instruct you to press any key to continue.Simply hit any key.)
  • Now your phone will automatically boot into “ZCX TWRP”.

Now comes enabling the OTA part and installing SuperSu. Now to do that first of all you need to change the language to English and you can do the same by following the instructions below.


Now to enable incremental OTA updates.Go to Settings and check Support MIUI-OTA and Disable Boot System DM-Verify.


And to root your device and install SuperSu. Click on Advanced>SuperSu and swipe to confirm flash.

Note:Now whenever you’ll get the OTA update,just download it and press update.Your device will automatically boot into TWRP and it will start installing the update.

Unlock Redmi Note 3 Bootloader | Tech-The Hard Way

What will change after locking bootloader?

  • Locking bootloader will not affect normal OTA updates;
  • ROOT will be disabled if user has enabled it before. Enabling ROOT will need to unlock bootloader;
  • Recovery mode is changed. Updating via Recovery will need to use Mi PC Suite;
  • After unlocking, the device can do all the things as before we locked bootloader.
  • Devices with locked bootloader can not update using Miflash. Users need to unlock bootloader if they want to flash Fastboot ROMs.

So in order to unlock the bootloader of your device,first you need to apply for permission here.


Once you land on the official bootloader unlocking page of Xiaomi,you’ll see a blue button which says “Unlock Now”,simply click on that.

Once you click the Unlock Now button,you’ll be prompted to sign in.


(The Login page will be in chinese language and to translate the same,you can either use google translate extension or simply Google chrome.)

Once logged in, you’ll see the Unlock Application Permissions page.


Now simply fill in all required fields then click on that green Apply Immediately button.

(I would recommend you to fill out your genuine reason.Say if you want to unlock the bootloader of your device for trying the custom rom,just mention it.)

In the next page, you’ll need to enter a verification code sent to you via SMS. Check your phone for any SMS verification sent by Xiaomi server. The code is usually valid for only 5 minutes so you need to enter it immediately.


Once you have submitted the 6 digits code, you’ll then be redirected to another page saying that from the point toward all you need to do is just waiting for Xiaomi Developers to review and approve your application. Once approved, you’ll get another SMS which normally arrives between 3 to 21 days. The approval process is manual so just be patient on this.

(In my case,I received the permission within two days.)


If in case you didn’t received the permission then,you can complain regarding the same on MIUI forum.Just google it.

Now coming to the actual bootloader unlocking process,here are the requirements:

  • An active Mi account linked to your device, your phone number and it has permission to proceed with bootloader unlock (follow previous steps above)
  • Your device needs to be running on MIUI Stable/China/Global Developer
  • Please backup your data for just in case scenario.
  • Again, if you are not fully aware of flashing custom ROM, then you better stay away of unlocking your phone’s bootloader.
  • Download Mi Flash Unlock tool for Windows here, and install it on your computer / PC.

Now follow steps below to unlock bootloader :

  • On your device, please login to your Mi account.
  • Put / reboot your device into bootloader mode. To do that, simply turn off your device, press the Power button and Volume down ( ) button at the same time.fastboot


  • On your computer, open MiFlash Unlock tool you’ve just installed. Click on the Agree button when asked.


  • Login to MiFlash Unlock tool with the same Mi Account.
  • Now connect your phone to computer using its USB cable.
  • Once your phone is connected, the Unlock button will become active. Next, simply click on the Unlock button to start the process. The unlock process will take about 10 – 15 seconds to complete. That’s all.

After unlocking your phone’s bootloader, you’ll be able to flash Fastboot ROM or custom ROM.

(To Relock your device bootloader,just flash the fastboot rom through MiFlash.)


First of all,I would recommend you to give genuine reason while filling up the application form and also it increases your chance of getting the approval.

Even after receiving the permission,you may not be able to unlock the bootloader,you need to be patient.In my case, i received the permission within two days and was not able to unlock the bootloader even after five days.What to do?Well,you can’t do anything except waiting.Then i tried unlocking my bootloader after some five days and successfully unlocked the bootloader.Patience is the key.
